Messy, Raw, Unedited, Authentic First Drafts

The Prologue, Bits of Chapter One, and an Outline of the Book

Trying it the first time as fiction

When I began to write these very rough drafts... actually, when I first even conceptualized what this project would grow into, I always imagined it as fiction. In my very first meeting with Raymond, he made it clear that while he supported my vision, he saw it being far more powerful and provocative from an autobiographical approach. We reached a compromise wherein I would try it out as fiction and we'd go from there — but ultimately, while this was fun to write, I think that Raymond was right... why take a true story and fictionalize it? Perhaps, I was (and am) a bit afraid of the way I imagine the stakes raising if I opt to tell this as a true story and to be actively included in the retelling. However, through this project and thought experiment, I think I agree.. this is a true story; it thrives on its truth, and I have lots to say about it that maybe (just, maybe) people will want to hear. On that note, here's me trying this as fiction. Let me know what you think and click the next tab over (or the button at the bottom of the screen), to hear me try it as narrative nonfiction.

Enjoy, and I'd love your feedback!

The Prologue

Brooklyn, New York, 1963

At 15 years old, Barbara made the confident, curious decision not to take the test. She was rather thin and basked in the naiveté of being the second youngest of four girls. She had her older sisters, Norma and Rosalie, to provide good morning gossip and school bus waves, and her younger sister, Arlene, to occupy the attention always directed at the baby of any family.  She decided to remain within the life she knew; she focused on what was in front of her.

It was November of 1963 and Thanksgiving was right around the corner. Her parents were rarely home; it seemed they always had something extremely important to take care of or incredibly urgent to attend to. They ran what was definitely considered to be a fairly successful fruit stand in Brooklyn, New York and often relied on Norma, Arlene, and their respective husbands to act as interim parents in their absence — all of which Barbara never seemed to mind.

Days came and left and typically looked quite the same each time they did. She enjoyed the same lunch at school with the same group of friends and did well enough in her classes to continue on to the next grade. Boys were cute, thoughts were as simple, and things felt as they did for most in a stable, normal family at fifteen years old.

***

Paul Noveshansky was in a band — that’s what won her over. Barbara loved the way he would sing to her as they walked hand and hand around Williamsburg; she liked whenever she didn’t need to think too much. It was easier, more stable, and more concise to wake up and brush her hair into a day filled with mundane predictability in her own controlled environment.

As the second youngest, it was easy to fall between the cracks. She kept to herself and with her parents tending to the fruit stand so often, she rarely had anyone to answer to. Perhaps, this was why she didn’t take the test. Perhaps, it was her undiagnosed, misunderstood mental health issues. Perhaps, it was the beauty of basking in what is unknown and uncertain at fifteen years old.

Whatever it may have been, the unknown, the uncertain, and the unavoidable cataclysmically collided nine months later, just one day after she and Paul had been rollerskating hand in hand. The naiveté was whisked away like the swift untie of a roller skate. On August 15th, 1964, Barbara gave birth to a healthy baby boy and to the horror, dismay, and confusion of everyone around her, made her very first concrete, completely uncomplicated decision: the baby was to be put up for adoption.

Chapter One (some of it)

Staten Island, New York, 1979

Why the fuck did I not take french? Every single one of my friends is taking french. “Spanish will be betta for your futcha,” I could hear my mother’s nasal, Brooklyn bite ringing in my ears. Forget the future; as for right now, I was a 16-year-old, boarding a friendless bus for a class trip to a broadway show I had absolutely no interest in seeing.

I could perfectly picture my life had I not let my mother’s opinion weigh on me at this very instant. I’d be lounging in the back of Mrs. ____’s room — Craig to my left, Ali and Pat and Marshall to my right, goofing off, quoting Mel Brooks as answers to questions we’d never understand, and wasting the seconds away until the bell said it was time for lunch.

Instead, here I was — step by step, I clung to my varsity jacket, stuck to the comfortable identity of “jock” like an old sticker you can’t seem to rip off your new cassette, no matter how hard you pull. Finally, I got onto the bus, behind kids I knew by the backs of their heads in class, and immediately locked eyes with it: my perfect, sticker-removing, lifesaver: Charlotte.

Charlotte and I were both on the swim team; we were friendly enough, and I waltzed down the center aisle of the bus hoping and praying she’d ask and then — bam: “Hey Jon! Why don’t you come sit here with me and Jade?”

Sure, I would love to. I sat on the aisle seat, and quickly became acquainted with the third person in the row. Jade was petite, blonde, with kind blue eyes. “Hi, nice to meet you, I’m Jon,” and I meant it, it really was nice to meet her.

And just like that, the bus started to move.

To be continued . . .
